Myths about loose leaf tea

Five myths about tea

According to legend, in 3000 B.C., Chinese Emperor Shen-Nung sat under a tree to rest with a bowl full of hot water in his hand. At that moment, a leaf fell into his cup. The aroma of the mixture encouraged the emperor to try it, and he immediately felt more awake and clear-headed. From then on, he continued to consume this drink for the rest of his life.

Perhaps the enigma surrounding the origin of tea is what has caused the list of its properties to grow longer and longer.

From Sabor de Té, we invite you to learn about these myths that are actually attributed to this drink.

  1. Tea contains more stimulating theine than caffeine: both are the same substance. The only variation is the amount each drink contains. For example, a cup of coffee has about 80 milligrams of caffeine, which would be roughly double that of a cup of black tea, which contains about 40 milligrams. The caffeine in tea is absorbed more slowly than in coffee.

  2. It helps with weight loss: it is not scientifically proven that it helps with weight loss, because without healthy eating guidelines for weight loss, drinking tea will not make us lose weight.

  3. Only green tea contains antioxidants: green tea contains a higher concentration, however, all varieties are a great source of antioxidants such as catechins. Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, it can help protect cells and tissues.

  4. Each tea comes from a different plant: absolutely all teas come from the same plant, the Camellia Sinensis, native to China.

  5. The longer it steeps in water, the stronger its effects: each tea family is prepared differently, and water quality is a key element for its preparation. Each tea is recommended a steeping time and a temperature that should not be exceeded, always between 60º and 95º so that its properties are not lost and thus ensure a good flavor full of benefits.

Although tea is not a magic drink, it contains many benefits that make it a very healthy infusion with many properties.
