History of Rooibos: "One of the most complete beverages there is"

The other day we told you the story of White Tea and today we are going to tell you the story of Rooibos. If you want to discover things you might not have known, stay and read this article and you're sure to learn something new.

Where does it come from?
Rooibos is also known by its scientific name Aspalathus Linearis. It is a plant of South African origin. It was discovered thanks to the efforts of a Russian emigrant at the beginning of the 20th century.

The infusion of Rooibos leaves in water is known for its reddish color, similar to that of Red Tea, as well as for its very personal and pleasant fruity aroma. Today we can distinguish two varieties of Rooibos: green or red.

Characteristics of Rooibos:

The name by which everyone knows it is Rooibos. For example, in South Africa it is also known as redbush, redbos, rotbuschsie, or koopmans tea. In Europe it is known as Masai tea or Bushman tea, although some of these peoples have no relation whatsoever to Rooibos. It grows and is cultivated in South Africa.

Harvesting takes place between January and March. During this time, the daytime temperature in South Africa is 40ºC to 45ºC and the night temperature is 20ºC. To be approved for harvesting, Rooibos must be about 18 months old. Its optimal production age is usually around 3 years old, as this yields positive results for approximately 8/9 more years. When it reaches 10 years old, it must transition from being a young plant, although surprisingly it could still reach twice that age.

How to prepare it?

  • Heat water in a teapot until it's about to boil.
  • Turn off the heat. Once it's off, add a teaspoon of Rooibos per cup you want to prepare.
  • Let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Finally, strain it and taste it, sweetening to your liking (if you want it to be sweet).

* The longer you let your Rooibos steep, the richer it will be.

Why should you try it?

One of its attractive features is that it is calming and decaffeinated.

It contains no caffeine, which makes it a good choice for you to drink as it relieves stress, helps you sleep, or simply helps you feel more balanced.
